چکیده

We study the realization of dimensional reduction and the validity of the hard thermal loop expansion for λφ theory at finite temperature, using an environmentally friendly finite–temperature renormalization group with a fiducial temperature as flow parameter. The one–loop renormalization group allows for a consistent description of the system at low and high temperatures, and in particular of the phase transition. The main results are that dimensional reduction applies, apart from a range of temperatures around the phase transition, at high temperatures (compared to the zero temperature mass) only for sufficiently small coupling constants, while the HTL expansion is valid below (and rather far from) the phase transition, and, again, at high temperatures only in the case of sufficiently small coupling constants. We emphasize that close to the critical temperature, physics is completely dominated by thermal fluctuations that are not resummed in the hard thermal loop approach and where universal quantities are independent of the parameters of the fundamental four–dimensional theory. Time-Dependent Real-Space Renormalization Group Method

In this paper, using the tight-binding model, we extend the real-space renormalization group method to time-dependent Hamiltonians. We drive the time-dependent recursion relations for the renormalized tight-binding Hamiltonian by decimating selective sites of lattice iteratively. The formalism is then used for the calculation of the local density of electronic states for a one dimensional quant...

Dimensional Reduction at High Temperature Revisited

We give a perturbative analysis of dimensional reduction in the infinite-temperature limit of thermal field theory in the imaginary time formalism. In analogy with the ordinary (Appelquist-Carazzone) decoupling theorem, we seek a class of renormaliza-tion schemes in which the heavy (non-static) modes decouple. This class turns out to consist of temperature-dependent schemes, so that the appropr...

Dynamical Renormalization Group Approach to Quantum Kinetics in Scalar and Gauge Theories

We derive quantum kinetic equations from a quantum field theory implementing a diagrammatic perturbative expansion improved by a resummation via the dynamical renormalization group. The method begins by obtaining the equation of motion of the distribution function in perturbation theory. The solution of this equation of motion reveals secular terms that grow in time, the dynamical renormalizati...

Hard Thermal Loops in a Moving Plasma and a Magnetic Mass Term

We consider the hard thermal loops of Quantum Chromodynamics for a moving quark-gluon plasma. Generalizing from this we suggest a candidate for the magnetic mass term. This mass term may also be useful in understanding the mass gap of three-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theories.

Two-loop analysis of non-Abelian Chern-Simons theory.

Perturbative renormalization of a non-Abelian Chern-Simons gauge theory is examined. It is demonstrated by explicit calculation that, in the pure ChernSimons theory, the beta-function for the coefficient of the Chern-Simons term vanishes to three loop order. Both dimensional regularization and regularization by introducing a conventional Yang-Mills component in the action are used. It is shown ...
